People often wonder how novels come to be, how writers are able to sow a bunch of words together and create such masterpieces. How they’re able to make the hearts of their readers tug or ponder in deep thought, how they’re able to gather a group of individuals and create a passion together.

You were one of the general census now.

Here you were, in the middle of a messy room, the smell of smoke and black coffee lingering the air as you laid on your couch with papers crumpled on each side and pens strewn across your living room.

“What the hell?”

You’re immediately greeted by a harsh light without warning, you immediately mumble a bunch of curses underneath your breath, “What the fuck, Mikoto?” you growled, shutting your eyes and covering it with a pillow.

“When you said you wanted to take a vacation at Hyogo I didn’t expect you to be pigging around!” Your agent exclaimed, his fiery red hair mirrored his volatile personality, just like you, he had a temper and everyone did say you can never fight fire with fire. It’s a miracle he put up with you.

You immediately flipped him off, “You better hope I don’t minus that on your paycheck, fucker.” you grumbled beneath the pillow, “Now close the lights, I’m tryna concentrate!”

“Concentrate on what exactly? I gave you two weeks, Y/N.”

“I’m doing it.”

“It’s been two months!” He half-yelled, “You haven’t been out for promotions in two years and you haven’t released a book in the three years, you’re going to be washed up at this point!”

You immediately remove the pillow from your face and stare at your agent, “Washed up? People still buy my books!” You retort.

“Your sales are going down, Y/N.” He placed a envelope in front of you, “You might not even be relevant at the end-”

You immediately grab the files and toss it to the side, it’s contents spilling out, “I have enough money to live a comfortable life.” You clenched your hands tight, what a joke, you paid this man to work for you. Why was he calling you out like he was your father or something? Even your father didn’t call you out this way.

“That’s not the point-”

You ignore him as you place another cigarette in between your lips, “Then what is the point? I pay you to manage my contracts and shit, what I do on my down time is none of your business.” you cut him off.

“If you’d stop being an ass for a moment-”

“You can leave, you know your way out.” You cut him off once again, completely tired of his bullshit despite him just getting here, “Now.”

Mikoto narrows his eyes, “The higher ups are giving you another month, if you can’t give them a draft, they’re letting you go.”

You run your hands through your dry and frizzy hair, still ignoring him. As you hear the door shut, you puff the smoke your of your system and stare at the blank sheets of papers and your battery dead laptop, “What a fuckin’ joke.” you mumble, crushing the cigar on the expensive mahogany table. You slowly shuffle towards the kitchen, wanting to prepare yourself an instant meal yet when you notice that your pantry and ref is empty and that your local delivery doesn’t seem to be available, you’re more annoyed as the moments past.

“What kind of fucking restaurants are these?” you scowled, staring at your phone, you hated going out. The sun was too bright, there would be people around and you hated being a few feet away from any living creature since their breathing patterns annoyed the fuck out of you. You could wait until-

You stop on your footsteps when you hear your stomach growling, “Ah shit.” you cursed, “Really?”

Grabbing the cleanest jacket and pair of darkest shades, you decided that you might as well grab some take-out and get out to find something to eat. Not even bothering to comb the frizzes of your hair or splash some water on your face, you walk down the street with your hood up and shades on. It wasn’t sunny as you recalled, maybe it had been two months already.

It was getting kind of cold compared to the last time you went out.

You stop at the first restaurant you come across, onigiri miya. Sounds interesting, might as well grab a bite since it wasn’t a rush hour here and you didn’t want to walk anymore farther. Opening the shop’s door, you're greeted by Japanese interior and the smell of onigiri and some sauce you can’t seem to point out, “Welcome to Onigiri Miya, why don’t ya grab a seat and I’ll be with you in a moment?” someone calls out.

You nod at the woman as you sit nearest to the exit and stare at the variety of onigiri’s the place has to offer. You never knew such flavors even existed to begin with.

Man, the owner must really love onigiri’s huh?

“Ya ready to order?”

Your thoughts are cut short as you hear a voice, you seem to notice that the woman’s voice is deeper this time and the accent of a local is more evident, odd. Looking up from the menu to tell her your order, you're thrown off guard by a pair of friendly grey eyes staring right at you and it was definitely not the woman from earlier.

He was fairly good-looking with a good build, indicating that he kept his life healthy and unlike you, this one seemed to have his life in order by his clean and pristine appearance, “Fatty tuna onigiri’s please. Five pieces.” you simply say, squinting your eyes behind your dark shades.

“Would you like anything to drink with that? Sides?”

“No.” You simply replied, you were still staring at him, completely enamored by his presence. He reminded you of something, better yet, he reminded you of a weird feeling. You slowly tap your fingertips on the table, eyes still glazing on him as he said that he’ll be back soon with your order. He didn’t seem to notice your open gaze on him.

Grey eyes.

A mysterious and happy smile.

The tapping on the table turns rhythmic as words slowly start to form in your head and before you know it, you're standing up and asking the nearby woman for a pen and a napkin. The woman looks at you in an odd manner but nevertheless she complies, you hurriedly start to scribble on the paper the first few sentences of what seemed to be the novel that you’ve been desperately trying to write these past two years.

Placing some money on the table for the meal that hasn’t arrived, you immediately run outside and back to your apartment, ignoring the woman behind you and the calls of the waiter who had struck an unfamiliar yet at the same time a familiar chord within you.

The world that was once void of color and inspiration seemed to be overflowing, all because of those grey eyes.

The sound of your tv was playing in the background, along with the loud voices coming from everywhere around you. There was chaos in your house, chairs being moved and squeaking as they glide across the wooden floor, high heels were clacking against the wood, makeup that was placed on the table was being shuffled through. You let it all happen, unbothered, knowing everyone there is taking care of you and making you look as good as you can for the awards show in five hours.

Zendaya, also known as one of your closest friends, was talking to you from the other side of the table. Your eyes were focused on your phone, scrolling through Instagram but still listening intently to the words that were coming out of Zendaya’s mouth. The hair clips in your hair were placed comfortably on your head, making you look like a child with pigtails on when the hair stylist was curling it. Zendaya laughed at you, taking a picture of the scene in front of her and posting it on her Instagram story.

“Hey dude, you should meet Zac Efron.” She brought up casually in conversation. You looked up at her, furrowing your eyebrows and widening your eyes a bit.

“I’m sorry, what?” You asked.

“Yeah, he told me he wants to meet you and I told him I’d introduce you to him. So basically, you‘re already going to meet him, I don’t know why I asked.” Zendaya let out a breathy laugh, causing you to reciprocate but roll your eyes as well. “He’s super cool anyway, you’d love him.”

“I’m sure he is, but Z, he’s literally like one of the most famous people ever. You do realize you’re talking about the Troy Bolton.“ She shrugged, shaking her head at you with a sarcastic grin.

“So what?”

You pursed your lips and shrugged as well, continuing your scrolling online. The person working on your hair moved over to your side, letting the makeup artist work on applying the foundation to your face.

“Who knows, you might just fall in love.”

The white car stopped in front of the event, the chauffeur saying their farewell to the two of you. After thanking them, both you and Zendaya stepped out from the same side. You helped Zendaya by holding out your hand, and she took it, using her other hand to clutch her dress. The interviewers were quick to arrive, already asking questions from the moment you opened the door. Nevertheless, you still smiled politely and stopped for a minute to be interviewed.

The two of you walked on the red carpet, waving to the fans that were standing behind the small barricade that stood between you. Some people were shoving cameras into your faces, trying to get the inside scoop to your personal lives. You simply dodged the questions with ease, losing Zendaya during the answers when she drifted away to be photographed. Excusing yourself, you made your way to the main carpet, posing for the cameras in front of you.

As you entered the venue, you looked around for Zendaya but found other people you know, greeting them with a warm smile and making small talk. Meanwhile, Zendaya had found Zac Efron and was having a conversation with him, getting him ready to meet you. He really was excited to finally meet you, having been supporting you from afar and admiring all of your work. You were also absolutely stunning, it was no surprise that he thought so.

After finally catching a glimpse of Zendaya’s tall figure from across the room, you walked to her, waving at a few people along the way. Once you made it there, you nervously smiled.

“Hey, I thought I lost you back there. Was starting to get worried.” You stated, looking into Zendaya’s eyes. You turned and looked at Zac, a huge smile placed on your face.

“Y/N, this is Zac. Zac, this is—“

“Y/N Y/L/N. The beautiful star of M/N. Big fan.” He stuck out his hand, gently taking yours and pressing a soft kiss upon it. You blushed, placing your other hand on your chest and posing for the camera that took a picture of you two. He pulled away and smiled at you.

“It really is amazing to meet a fan.” You replied. He laughed, shaking his head slightly. “But seriously, you’re making my childhood dream come true. I’m over here meeting Troy Bolton!”

“Did you ever, doubt your dream will ever come true? Did you ever...I forgot the rest.” He sang his iconic song slightly and laughed. It clicked in your head, making you gasp and almost drop your drink.

“This is the best day of my entire fucking life.”

The rest of the night consisted of you and Zac hanging out when you could. It wasn’t awkward at all between you. You would be talking about something that recently had happened, and stood up together whenever Zendaya would win an award. It was all fun and games, up until it was time to go and you had to go through the red carpet.

“Y/N! Y/N! Is Zac Efron your rebound? Is he replacing Tom Holland now?” You tensed up at the loud voice questioning you, your eyebrows furrowing in shock. That name hadn’t crossed your mind the entire night and it hit you like a train when you finally heard it. You looked around, Zac grabbing your wrist and gently pulling you with him into the car with Zendaya.

“Shit, Y/N. I’m sorry, I should’ve said something, I just—“ You shook your head at Zendaya, a crooked smile on your face as you tried to find light in the situation.

“Dude I’m totally fine.”

“You sure?” Zac asked, the concern evidently on his face. You nodded, elbowing him playfully.

“Of course, can’t wait to kick your ass at Mario Party.” You retorted and Zac smirked, rolling his eyes.

“I’d like to see you try.”

You were pacing around in your room, your finger in your mouth as you nervously chewed on your nails. Zendaya sat on the bed, her eyes trained on you with worry.

“I know you’re nervous but you’re going to be okay.” She spoke, titling her head slightly and curling the corners of her lips downwards.

“I just don’t think I can face him.” She sighed at you, knowing exactly well the reason you’re nervous.

Tomorrow is the first day of filming for the new Spiderman movie, Far From Home. Since you were an actress from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you were going to make an appearance as Peter Parker’s love interest/partner in crime. Sure, it is completely normal for someone to be completely anxiety-ridden before acting in a huge movie that was pegged to make millions of dollars. Although this was a huge reason of your freak-out, there was also another.

Tom Holland was the actor who played Peter Parker in the new Spiderman movie franchise. He became extremely well-known after his debut in Captain America: Civil War, which is where the two of you had met. Your character was fighting alongside Tony Stark, having met Peter Parker due to being on the same team. It was obvious that both of your characters had chemistry and the writers were heading towards the two of you becoming an iconic teen couple.

But the situation was that your characters weren’t the only ones who had chemistry. You and Tom Holland were also crushing on each other during the filming process. It isn’t surprising, many actors get together after acting intimately on screen.

So the two of you got together after the year of filming and after the year of becoming best friends. The both of you were so comfortable with each other, hanging out most of the week and having an absolute blast every single time. Everything was so much more fun when the two of you were together, making the older actors laugh at your outgoing behavior. There was always a slightly flirty tone in your voices when you made jokes, and the teasing from the other actors continued until you both finally decided to start going out.

So far it seems as if the both of you would live happily ever after with no problem, but the problems arose when you had to move away to Iceland and film another movie outside of the MCU while Tom had to film Avengers: Infinity War. You were completely fine with keeping a long-distance relationship, claiming that you’re still so in love with him and you want to stay with him.

He didn’t think the same. He loved you, but he couldn’t keep up with having to manage having a girlfriend and filming at the same time. He felt as if he had to prioritize one over the other and he felt it wasn’t fair for either of you. The guilt was eating away at him for weeks, until he finally spoke to you about the problem, ending things off with you through an argument.

You wished it didn’t end that way, but things were piling up on both of you and you blew up on each other. The screaming over the phone, the heat burning at your faces, the break in your hearts. It was overwhelming, so you two ended it right then and there with a harsh ‘fuck you’.

It’s been over a year since you last talked to Tom, your anger no longer there and your heartbreak is already healed. The only problem was that you haven’t spoken to Tom, or even try to speak to him. Your pride was constantly beating you up, yelling in your ear about how if he wanted to talk, he would have messaged first. You wanted to say happy birthday, you wanted to say merry Christmas, you wanted to say happy new year, but you never did.

Now it’s the day before filming and you’re crying. You’re letting go of all your frustrations into Zendaya’s shoulder. You’re letting go of all your insecurities, anxiety, and fear through your tears. You felt like a high school girl, avoiding your ex boyfriend because he did you wrong. You wanted to be mature about the situation and prepare for your role but knowing that you had to act like you’re in love with Tom was nerve-wracking.

So there you sat, your stomach nauseated with butterflies and your head pounding as the tears stuck to your cheeks. You were exhausted and you hated that the reason was because of him.

You know how I said that the last two episodes made 1532 seemed like eighteen months long? Well, this episode just… you’ll see, it’s rather special in it’s own way.

Checkmate

Henry destroys all ties with authority and the past. After many failed attempts to have his marriage to Catherine annulled by the Catholic Church, Henry runs out of patience and marries a pregnant Anne Boleyn in secret. He appoints the young Lutheran Thomas Cranmer to succeed the deceased William Warham as Archbishop of Canterbury and strips Queen Catherine of her title and status, along with Princess Mary; they are hence to be known as the Princess Dowager of Wales and the Lady Mary, respectively. The Act of Restrain of Appeals is presented to Parliament by Cromwell and passes. As Sir Thomas More has resigned as Chancellor, Henry hands the position to the pro-Lutheran Thomas Cromwell. Anne Boleyn is crowned Queen of England to a small and uneager crowd and escapes an assassination attempt. Pope Paul III threatens to excommunicate the king and the church of England from the Roman Catholic Church if Henry does not return to Catherine, but Henry tears the papal edict in half. Henry is also disappointed when Anne Boleyn gives birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, instead of his desired son, and soon resumes his philandering with ladies of the court despite assuring Anne they will still have a son.

A Secret Marriage, A Secret Pregnancy, A Coronation – Oh My!

After one instance of the sex, Anne is instantly pregnant. And not just even a little pregnant, because she’s already suffering immense intense pregnancy cravings for apples. This is based on a real life anecdote, but I have to question the timeline here.

Anne and Henry went to France in September 1532 (another reason why they couldn’t have conceived Elizabeth there, unless Anne managed to be pregnant for twelve months. I screwed up the times last week, so my bad there. It’s been a while since I last looked it all up). They would not be married for the first time until November 14 1532. I know some women start to have cravings at two to three weeks, but for Anne to be ‘Yup, definitely pregnant, I’m so full of baby right now’, she has to be at least past a month or two. And there just isn’t the time to fit into what happened and when.

And yes, it’s still 1532! The year that never, ever ends!

Realising Anne’s condition (even though pregnancies were usually recognised from when the baby ‘quickened’ i.e. starting to move around three months and there’s no way Anne can be three months pregnant) Henry orders Cranmer to look into his marriage…

… but gets married in secret anyway.

There’s no need to rush Henry! This baby won’t be born for another ten months.

Anyway, after a second official marriage in January, and a little political wrangling, Anne can now be crowned queen. She’s the only queen consort in British history to receive a coronation separate from her royal spouse, and the only one to be crowned with St. Edward’s Crown. There’s some BS nonsense at her parade, but we’ll go into that later.

It’s also really off because of the warped timeline the show has decided to follow. It’s now June, 1533, and because Anne fell pregnant in September, she should be giving birth. Like, literally on that carriage, she should be deep in labour. But she’s managing to keep it in for another three months.

Henry places a crown on Anne’s head, and she’s anointed and invested as queen. I say ‘a crown’ because that tiny little pathetic coronet is not St Edward’s Crown.

It was remade in the seventeenth century, but the royal monogram is based on St Edward’s Crown.

This is Henry’s, so this is probably what the crown looked at during Henry’s time. It is not a single pathetic coronet that barely shows up. How do you ruin making an impressive and royal crown?

Henry gets aggressive and nasty with Anne at the coronation feast, because foreshadowing.

This aggressive side of Henry continues into the longest pregnancy ever experienced by any woman ever. When sleeping at night – and FYI, they shouldn’t share a bed. Royal couples had separate apartments in palaces, and completely separate bedrooms. Henry and his wives would not share a bed like a couple might do now – Anne is too tired and stressed out by the longest pregnancy in the world to have sex with Henry. He’s disgusted and angered by her rejection.

Because it’s only the most sexy and romantic of men who try to force their wives into having sex with them! (Even though Henry wouldn’t try anything like that for fear of damaging the child or causing a miscarriage)

Anne finally goes into labour, and luckily for her, it’s incredibly easy. She pushes exactly once and the baby just flies out. Unfortunately, it’s not a son. It’s a girl, and Henry is taken aback. But sons will surely follow, for they are both young and fertile.

Lol no, Henry is now sleeping with anyone else because how dare his wife have a child and it’s not what he wanted.

Do you play… chess?

Wait, where are you going to put that chess piece? Cause she doesn’t look very happy about it…

… oh. Oh. Hope you don’t plan on playing with it again.

The London Knoll

The Imperial assassin is revealed to be none other than William Brereton. Which makes pretty much no sense.

Not only was he almost fifty by this point, but he’s a longstanding member of Henry’s inner circle, serving as a groom of the privy chamber. He was a wealthy and respected member of court, and definitely not a twenty something devoted Catholic who wanted to kill Anne Boleyn. This assassination nonsense is exactly that – nonsense. Events are dramatic enough as it is without having an assassin running about.

After attempting to kill Anne, Brereton travels to Rome to beg forgiveness from the Pope. Instead, the Pope enlists him as a Jesuit and sends him back to kill Anne again.

The Jesuits aren’t formed until 1540. Even if you needed to add to this ridiculous mess, you didn’t need to add in Jesuits. And then the producers decide to recreate the assassination of JFK for no apparent reason.

Don’t tell me that’s not based on the death of JFK, because it looks so much like it. I find that a little cheap and distasteful, to co-opt a real life trauma to improve the shabbiness of your own writing. And I don’t think sixteenth century guns were accurate enough to carry out this sort of operation. Luckily, some random mook dies instead and is shoved under a choir stand to die alone and unnoticed.

He’s almost caught out by the fact he didn’t think to wipe off all the incredibly obvious and super noticeable gunpowder from his hands, but William Brereton escapes to assassinate another day!

Brandon VS The Boleyns

The tension between Charles Brandon and Thomas Boleyn gets worse because their servants get into a stupid fight and kill each other. After all, Charles Brandon needed an actual, legitimate reason to hate the Boleyns other than ‘the writers needed something for him to do this season’.

What Are You Up To, Thomas Cranmer?

Besides all this, there’s the question of the English Church and Henry’s first marriage. To force his second marriage through, he decides to make Thomas Cranmer his Archbishop of Canterbury, the most senior religious position in England.

He transported his wife from Germany in a box. It is sort-of a true story. Cranmer was said to have hidden his wife from the King in a box, not taken her across half a continent, but it’s only a ‘it is said’ kind of truth. There’s no evidence that it actually happened.

The supporters of Katherine are not happy with this because Cranmer is a ‘Lutheran’. That’s simply not true. Cranmer was more Calvinist than Lutheran, because Lutheran is not a catch all for ‘not being a Catholic’.

Meanwhile, Cromwell has pushed through parliament The Act in the Restraint of Appeals which basically means that it’s illegal to apply to foreign courts of justice and to appeal outside of England as it’s an empire. Cromwell, it would seem, is completely in charge of government and Henry doesn’t have any say over anything as he’s a big doofus with no ideas of his own.

Cranmer, with little to no fuss, announces that Henry and Katherine’s marriage is not valid and that Anne and Henry’s marriage is good and legal. The Pope declares Henry excommunicated.

What About Katherine and Mary?

Katherine is told of this change. She will now be the Dowager Princess of Wales, and Henry will support her no longer. She proclaims herself to always be Queen of England.

And then there’s the Princess Mary. She’s now all grown up, but no longer a Princess. She is to be the Lady Mary, and royal heir no longer. She was told this in real life by the Duke of Norfolk, but he’s mysteriously vanished from the show.

Our New Gay Subplot

Mark Smeaton, in a public place, very loudly comes onto George Boleyn. I guess he’s going to be executed for sodomy in the next episode because it’s very illegal at this point. I highly doubt queer people were loudly shouting about their sexuality in a public arena because, you know, death is bad.

Come on, Vogue, Let Your Body Move to the Music

Those clothes are straight up pure Elizabethan. There is nothing of the 1530s about them. And take that purple off, Smeaton. You’re a common servant, and purple is for the royal family alone.

You ready for your villain song, Henry? Because that collar is straight from Maleficent. That collar is far too high for a man like Henry to wear.

Mary, that hood is not right. That is a very central Germanic hood and would never be found at the English court (at least, until Anna of Cleeves arrives).

This is another from the Katherine Willoughy ‘Lamps of Tudor England’ series, and it’s just as hideous as the first one.

Nice pregnancy sack. Anne, you’d be wearing exactly the same dress as you’d always wear, but with the ties and stomacher loosened to allow room for the bump. Tudor England didn’t have maternity sacks for women.

That is Jacobean hat right there. Take it off and burn it.

Cloudy With A Chance

Part 5: …of Seoul Fog.

Hanbin stares outside the window of his office. Pen tapping rhythmically on the messy notebook in front of him.

‘Daily Grind’ was a (ironically) weekly satirical and lifestyle magazine that he had taken a pay cut to work for. After 2 months of job interviews and being offered unpaid internships, Hanbin had gotten desperate and taken a lower paying position. That was 12 months ago. He’s grateful the chief editor took a shining to him and enjoyed his writing.

He’s also grateful that he allowed Hanbin to move into a shared office with the magazine’s star colummist. He wasn’t really looking to make any friends but Donghyuk had slowly and very surely wormed his way into his life. Their office was only on the 3rd floor but Hanbin still enjoyed staring out the window and being able to see the sky as he worked.

It was late afternoon and the sky was already a peach haze. It reminded him of the bathroom tiles at his parent’s old house but less gaudy. He picks at the wool of his soft beige jumper as he watches a group of pigeons fly from one office building to another. There weren’t many more accidental Summer-Clothes-In-Winter situations these days, partly because he made a conscious effort to check the weather report but mainly because Jiwon had gotten into the habit of sending him weather updates via badly typed texts in the morning before work.

This morning’s text: ‘cold AF! mght rain. wear smthing warm. xj’

He had no idea Jiwon was a morning person and he’s still not entirely sure if that’s down to preference or necessity. He knows that the car garage where Jiwon works opens at 7:30 but he keeps on forgetting to ask him why it’s so early.

Hanbin is definitely not a morning person. He isn’t exactly a night person either. He enjoys the time between the end of work and sleep because it was strictly his time to do as he pleased. “You have the dopiest smile on your face right now.” He looks up as Donghyuk returns from his caffeine run and hands him a warm take-away cup.

Hanbin puts his phone down and waves a dismissive thanks. ‘I asked for tea, not redundant commentary. Save that for your lame articles.’

Donghyuk laughs as he sits at his own desk. ‘Oh you know my commentary comes free with the hot beverages.’

Hanbin takes a sip. “There’s milk in this.”

“Yup.”

“And vanilla.”

“Yup.”

“Why?”

Donghyuk gives him a cheerful smile. “It’s called a London Fog! I thought you might like it. As the young kids would say, “it suits your aesthetic”.

Donghyuk likes using air-quotes. Hanbin hates them.

“I hate air-quotes. And why can’t you just get me what I want? What’s with the daily surprises?”

Donghyuk rolls his eyes and gives Hanbin a withering look. “Do you like it?”

Hanbin says nothing.

Donghyuk nods, satisfied. “Right. Then stop being so dramatic about some cow and a vanilla bean. It’s good to try new things.”

“Why can’t you just say ‘milk’ like a normal person?” Hanbin regrets the words as soon as they leave his mouth.

“BECAUSE! I’m a writer! We need to exercise our vocabulary and literary devices! It’s like going to the gym but for your mind! I’m basically like an athlete. You’re more like….Garfield.”

“The lazy cartoon cat? You know I’m more of a dog person.” Hanbin chuckles and suddenly remembers that Jiwon is deathly afraid of cats for some reason.

“Okay you have that creepy smile on your face again. What’s up with you?” Donghyuk eyes him suspiciously as he takes a sip of his coffee. Hanbin knows he’s running scenarios in his head. It’s when Donghyuk’s eyes light up that Hanbin braces himself for the theories. “Ohhh. Are you having a text relationship? Oh wait! Is it someone in our office?!”

Hanbin grimaces at the choice of words. “What? No.”

The problem with Donghyuk is not just his dictionary brain or Mr Congeniality title in the office but the speed and accuracy of his observations. He was, as they liked to say in capital letters, The Perceptive One. Hanbin always thought he was good at reading people but then he met Donghyuk and realised that he wasn’t anywhere near his level. He remembers when Donghyuk had bought him green tea on their first caffeine run because, “You didn’t seem like a coffee person, too much nervous energy.”

It made Hanbin even more anxious but after 6 months together, he’s learnt how to deal with the panic attacks.

Right now, Donghyuk has a small smile on his face. “I bet you do….” he says in a bright sing-song voice. “I know these things Hanbin. I’m almost never wrong so you might as well just tell me.”

Hanbin looks down at his notebook and turns a page over. “There’s nothing to tell. It’s just texts from my mum about my sister.”

Donghyuk wheels his chair over to Hanbin’s desk and stops when they face each other. “You know you’re horrible at lying right? You get all twitchy.”

“I do not.” He scratches his neck but drops his hand down immediately when he realises what he’s doing.

Donghyuk doesn’t miss it and his grin just gets wider by the minute. “So. Are they cute?” He wiggles his eyebrow suggestively as he sits back in his chair and tugs at his multiple earrings.

Hanbin scowls. “We are not having this conversation.” He picks up his pen.

“Oh please. Suddenly you want to get back to work now? Come on Hanbin, it’s getting so boring around here. There hasn’t been any news since we got this office.”

“If I tell you, will you promise to never ask me about it again? Like until we retire.”

Donghyuk leans his elbows on Hanbin’s desk and rests his head on his palms. “Of course.”

“Okay. So it’s a guy. We’re just friends. We’re not dating. I don’t date. The end.”

Donghyuk’s eyes widen comically again as he gapes at Hanbin.

Hanbin starts scribbling lines on his notebook. He’s nervous but knows there’s no reason to be. He’s sure Donghyuk has figured out his preferences by now. If he can figure out his caffeine preference then he’s probably already figured out Hanbin’s human preference too.

“Wow…” Donghyuk says finally, taking off his glasses to rub his eyes. “Do you have a photo?”

Hanbin laughs. “No. I’m definitely not showing you!”

“But why? Please? My life is so empty and sad and lonely. I need to live vicariously through you.”

Hanbin shakes his head. “Okay, everything you just said is a total lie.”

“My mind needs constant stimulation. PLEASE HANBIN!”

Hanbin looks at him in alarm, eyes trying to ignore the inquisitive stares from their colleagues outside. “Oh my god! Okay! Just keep your voice down. Geez. And you call me dramatic.”

He scrolls through the photos of Jiwon on his phone until he finds one without a grimace or weird hand signs. He finally stops at a photo he took back in June’s tattoo shop. Jiwon had just turned to face the camera when Hanbin had captured it, there was no faked bravado or acting cool, it was just Jiwon with a slight look of surprise on his face.

Hanbin hesitates but eventually holds the phone screen out towards Donghyuk.

Donghyuk peers at the phone for a second then his eyes flick back and forth between Hanbin and the photo. “Are you serious?”

Hanbin frowns. “What? What’s wrong with him?”

“Oh where does one even start with Kim Jiwon?” Donghyuk murmurs under his breath.

“Wait. You know him?” Hanbin questions in shock. “How?”

“Well firstly, I know everybody.” Donghyuk states matter-of-factly. Hanbin rolls his eyes, even though he knows it’s not far from the truth. “Secondly, remember when I did a piece on imported american muscle cars coming to Seoul? I went to his garage.”

“And……?” Hanbin prompts.

“And….he’s a cool guy. Just not really someone I thought you’d be interested in.”

Hanbin knows he’s walking right into Donghyuk’s trap but curiosity gets the better of him. “Okay, what does that mean?”

Donghyuk drinks the rest of his coffee slowly. Deliberately.

“DONGHYUK!” Hanbin hisses and looks at him with all the frustration he can muster.

Donghyuk doesn’t smile though. “Promise me that you won’t get mad?”

And that’s when Hanbin knows that his day is going to end badly. “Okay. Promise.”

Donghyuk hesitates. “He seems nice Hanbin. Really. I just heard that he was dating someone here but he still has a girlfriend back in America. I’m sure it’s just a rumour that someone made up about him and you guys probably already know.”

Speechless, Hanbin just stares at him as his heart sinks and his brain short circuits from processing the information. The silence stretches to the point where Donghyuk starts looking increasingly worried.

“Oh god, I thought you knew. I’m not implying anything! Just thought you should know what people are saying since you guys are friends now. Hanbin? Are you okay? I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have told you. I’m an idiot and you should honestly just ignore me. It’s probably not even true. You know what gossip is like….” He can hear Donghyuk rambling on but it just sounds like a muffled voice through water.

He tells himself not to dwell on disappointment because part of him always knew this would happen. People like Jiwon just don’t get involved with people as boring as him. But life is nothing but a bag of twisted irony; even when you know something is inevitable, it can still hurt you twice as much when it arrives. Preparing for an oncoming trainwreck doesn’t make the collision any less painful.

He swallows audibly and shakes his head. “It’s okay. There’s nothing to be upset about. We’re just friends. You don’t have to apologise. I’m not mad, I just didn’t know.” He offers Donghyuk a small smile which he knows comes across as blatantly fake.

Donghyuk opens his mouth to say something but thinks better of it. Instead, he reaches over to grab their empty cups to throw into the trash. “I’m really sorry Hanbin….I shouldn’t have said anything.” Donghyuk says quietly before wheeling his chair back to his desk.

Hanbin just nods as he opens his laptop, stares at the black screen and waits for it to wake up from sleep.

Title: Shantel Interview

shantel: Welcome to this Interview Nick let’s start with an easy one. » What are your hobbies or interests?

Nick: I love to play sports, especially soccer and baseball. Me and my brothers used to have a baseball team for when we were on the road called ironically roaddogs. I’ve also recently took up cooking. I can’t make anything fancy but I’m working my way up slowly but surely.

shantel: That sounds super exciting ! what do you cook ?

Nick: At the moment I make a pretty good spaghetti and meatballs everything made from scratch even though I can’t take credit for the recipes because they are my grandmother’s and my meatballs tend to be a little on the dry side but you don’t notice it after a glass of wine or two. -chuckles-

shantel: Well i’d love to try it someday. so you better invite me - laughs- okay let’s go to my second question. 2. » Who was your best friend when you were growing up? Are they still your friend? If not, why aren’t they now? Who’s your best friend now?

Nick: Next time I’m cooking I’ll make sure you’re the person i call. My best friend was and still is my brothers. I’ve always been close to them especially Joe. I love Kevin and Frankie just as much as I love Joe but we just have a special bond.

shantel: Well i can’t wait to try it! i am honored. That sounds really cute and amazing. it’s good to have a special bond with your brothers. family is always important. I don’t know what to do without my family. Let’s go to my third question. 3. » How do you handle anger? Are you slow to anger or easy to annoy? Are people afraid of you, and if so is this justified?

Nick: I try not to be but I can get easily annoyed it’s hard not to annoy me. It’s definitely a trait of mine that I’m working on. I think people are after seeing the muscles I’ve gained since after being on my show Kingdom.

shantel: It’s never fun to get annoyed but it happend to all of us i don’t like seeing people angry or annoyed makes me wanna calm them down. so my next question is. What goal do you most want to accomplish in the next six months?

Nick: A goal of mine I’d like to accomplish in the next 6 months is to finish my next album and release it, I know my fans have been patiently waiting for it. And I am so eager for them to listen to the next part of my journey.

shantel: Sounds exciting. if i am honest i am super excited aswell - laughs- Let’s make this next question a little bit more personal. don’t worry it’s not to personal but it is about your little old self. If you could say one thing to your younger self what would it be ?

Nick: One thing I would tell my younger self not be so discouraged by rejection it’s a part of life and each rejection only opened a new door and thought me something new along the way. I wouldn’t be as successful or humble as I am without the rejection I faced over the years.

shantel: That’s the best advice i have ever heard and i’m sure if your younger self could hear this he would be so much stronger. but you are already a strong person don’t forget that. Let’s go back to your work What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done for your job ? you don’t have to go in specific details of course you may whatever feels comfortable for you

Nick: The craziest thing I’ve ever had to do for a job had to be portraying a closeted gay person for my show Kingdom. It definitely was hard to get into a mentality of not being able to share who I really am to friends and family since in reality I can’t imagine hiding stuff that Nate had to hide from his father from my own parents and brothers.

Nick: But it gave me a wonderful insight on how the LBGQT community goes through on a daily and it kind of makes me want to work harder for them to live a normal life like the rest of us.

shantel: Oh wow, i can imagine how crazy but super hard that must have been because it is something people deal with daily. I love hearing you say that you have a wonderful insight on the lbgqt commutity goes through things. i love it. since we talk about amazing communities and being an example for someone or something. Who is your role model, and why?

Nick: My role model is probably going to be a cliche but it’s my father. He has never let us give up on our dreams even when we practically were bankrupt and me, Joe and Kevin had to share a room and we had this tiny apartment. And when i was in beauty and beast as a kid every day my dad would drive the 2-3 hours there and back to New York so I could get to rehearsals. Just recently he went through cancer treatments and surgery. he’s always had so much strength and courage. He’s an amazing father i hope one day I’m half the father he is.

shantel: I am not gonna lie to you that answer made me a little emotional - laughs- you have such a beautiful family. Oh wow Cancer treatments and surgery how is he doing now ?

shantel: my next question is Do you see yourself settling down in the next 5 years ?

Nick: He’s in remission now. Thanks for asking. The day we found out was probably the scariest and worse moments of my life.

Nick: I definitely do. I was pretty close with my ex girlfriend but I don’t think I’m ready just yet but I see my brother with his daughters and whenever I’m with them I get an inkling of when I have my own kids and I can’t wait for it.

shantel: I can imagine how scary that must have been. and yes i feel you whenever i see my friends getting married or having kids i am like i want that aswell and im not the youngest anymore but it’s a huge dream of mine. If you look back on your Jonas Brothers life, what do you think was the best moment and what was the least moment ?

Nick: Best moment with my brothers has to be hands down getting to perform for Stevie Wonder I mean performing for the president was great and the awards were pretty cool. But growing up in a household when Stevie Wonder was the music of choice 90 percent of the time it was like a dream come true for me and my brothers. It’ll be a moment I cherish forever there are times I go back on youtube and re watch because I don’t believe it actually happened. Least favorite moment was the day I told my brothers that I think we should end the band. I will never forget the words that they said and angry looks on their faces. The guilt sometimes still eats at me.

shantel: Oh wow Stevie Wonder he is a legend and i am such a big fan so i’m jealous of you guys performing for him.

shantel: we sadly have arrived at my last question which is : How would you convince people to follow their dreams ?

Nick: Just go for it, it’s as simple as that. If you want to become a writer grab a computer or notebook and start writing it might be sucky at first but no one is good in the beginning. I mean Kevin didn’t even want to be a musician the only reason he learned guitar was because he was sick and bored at home so he picked it up and started to teach himself. I think the worse thing in the world isn’t having your dreams come true but having not trying for your dreams at all.

shantel: such amazing advice, i am sure people who will read this will be ready for their dreams to come true. Thank you so much for this wonderful interview. it was such a honour to meet you and talk to you. and success in life

Nick: Welcome to this Interview Shantal let’s start with question number 1. Where did you grow up and how did you grow up, for example mom, dad, siblings?

Shantel: hey thank you so much for having me. I grew up in Luverne Minnesota with my 2 siblings one brother and one sister who I am very close with and of course my amazing parents Who mean the world to me

Nick: You grew up very similarly as I did. Are your brother and sister in the entertainment industry as you are. If not you don’t have to go into details what they do if they want to be kept private.

Shantel: No They arent in the entertainment world like I am , I am the only one Who works there

Shantel: But They do help me with my lines

Shantel: When I have to study them

Nick: It’s great you have such a supportive family you need that in this industry. Now let’s go to the next question shall we, 2. What is the biggest thing you learned from living with your family to living on your own?

Shantel: What I have learned while living with my family is first of all How to be independent and How to do stuff on my own but dont forget the fact I also learn How to take care of younger kids. It Will be hands for in the future

Shantel: Living on my own learned me to see the world differently

Shantel: From my point of view and Not from my parents point of view

Nick: I can see what you mean, you get a sense of your true self when you’re on your own. All right question 3. I know you’re most famous for your role for One Tree Hill but other than that character what’s another role you’re proud of and wish more people knew about?

Shantel: Exactly Thats What I meant to say. I do am mostly know as Quinn from One Tree Hill but people are also startimg to notice me as Patty from the Flash so that makes me super happy

Nick: I have to say sadly I have yet to see Flash but with my busy schedule I don’t get time to watch television but I’ll make sure it’s next for me to watch. Question 4 is a bit of a deep question but I would love to know your opinion or thoughts; There is a big controversy with marijuana how do you feel about it do you think it should be legalized?

Shantel: I personally dont feel comfortable around drugs but I think Its should only be legal for medicine and painkillers Not for people with addictions or people Who Wanna use it for a fun time. So maybe They only get it on a note from a doctor or something

Nick: That’s how I feel about it, it just saddens me there will be people who will take advantage of that situation. Let’s move on to something more happier I hope with question 5. Favorite Childhood memory or memories, because I’m sure it would be hard to choose just one.

Shantel: I agree and drugs ruins your life and makes you turn into a person you arent. My favourite memory from my childhood has to me my first performance from school we did old macdonald had a farm and I was a piggy it was so cute we still have it on tape

Nick: That would be something I would love to see, that actually perfectly aligns with my next question 6. what made you want to be an actress?

Shantel: Well Next time we meet I Will show you. Hmm What made me want to be an actress Well besides being a princess ive also wanted to become an actress as little Girl and

Shantel: Lucky. For me that dream came true in 1999-2000

Nick: The dream of being an actress or being a princess and if it’s the second one then you’ve been holding back on me in this interview.

Shantel: Hahah being an actress I bet if I was a royal you would be hearing a lot more from me on social media and news

Nick: I think so too and I was going to say if I was royalty I would be giving up this acting job even though I see what Prince William and Kate Middleton go through and I don’t think I could handle that.

Nick: Question 7. What’s your favorite rainy day activity so to speak or something you like to do when you have free time?

Shantel: Hahah if we both were royals than this interview was gonna be really different. Okay this might sounds weird but I love to walk around in the rain with my umbrella or Not I love the smell and sound of it but I also love to have a pj day and watch movies all day. I also would love to have a rainy Kiss but Thats a dream that wont come out that quickly

Nick: I feel like that’s every girls dream damn ryan reynolds and the notebook isn’t that the movie that has the rain kiss him and rachel mcadams.

Shantel: Yes Thats Exactly the movie I was talking about Damn Ryan he makes every Girl Go weak for a Kiss in th rain. So if you ever meet someone and the love that movie you know What to do Haha

Nick: Good advice for my next girlfriend whenever that will be. Let’s move onto question 8. This one is a little personal and you don’t have to say names but tell me about your worst date and it doesn’t even need to be a first date just in general worst date?

Shantel: My worst date was in highschool he was a handsome Guy but he only talk about himself and dates me so he could fool around with my best friend behind my back

Nick: Oh god that’s awful I was hoping for a more comical story then a sad one, well I’m sorry about that jerk.

Shantel: I havent dated many people but my last 3 out of 4 people were okay and took all 1 year bit so long

Nick: I’m glad you had better luck after that jerk. Do you want to keep going, question 9. What’s something you want to do in your career? Like maybe write a book, direct etc.?

Shantel: Yes keep going I like this interview. I would love to bring a single but I dont think Im a Good singer but otherwise I would love to write a childbook or Make my own movie

Nick: I could help you with that single I’ve done quite a bit of producing so I know my way around a studio I mean I should it’s been my second home since I was 13.

Shantel: If I ever have the confidence in singing I Will Make sure to let you hear my voice and you can Tell me What you think of it ?

Nick: And I will be completely honest.

Shantel: Yeah we should totally hang out sometimes and have Loads of fun. Oh I almost thought you were gonna ask me my fave Jonas brother Haha but my favourite song has to be burnin up

The inevitable has arrived. I am officially bored with blogging, and it only took 8 years, 5 months, 8 days, and 854 blog posts to get here. I can still easily remember the thrill I used to experience when it came time to write a new post … but I just don’t feel it anymore.

Bob: Well, you know that we’ve been together for a long time … like a really long time. You and I, we’ve had some great moments, right? Do you remember: “Top Ten Reasons Not to be an Architect“?

Life of an Architect: Yeah – that one’s a classic. I remember that you actually felt really guilty for writing it once it became popular. Life of an Architect: I knew it! Podcast has been trying to come between us for years. Don’t think I haven’t seen the emails on your computer. I saw the images and links to XLR microphones and USB audio interfaces. Ugh … I thought you were going through a phase. I feel dirty.

Bob: You had to know this coming. Our relationship has been difficult the past few years and you know it. The constant hacking – that’s your fault, by the way, you’re too nice to strangers – the stolen identities for romance scams … Let’s face it, our relationship lately hasn’t been much fun and it’s not because I haven’t put in the work, because you know I have.

Life of an Architect: So what happens now? Are you just going to pack up all your stuff and move on? I suppose almost 9 years together means nothing to you. I gave you my best years and now that things have become difficult, you’re just going to move on with Podcast. Is it because she’s younger than me? She has all that hardware and I’m just old software?

Bob: Come on, why do you have to be this way? You know that this has nothing to do with PodCast’s hardware, although it’s been kinda fun looking at all pictures and going online for research. Some of that old thrill has come back and just the idea of it has recharged my creative batteries.

Bob: I’ll still be with you, just not as often. I’ll still write posts, and as it stands, I’m planning on posting all the show notes and relevant information pertaining to each podcast here on Life of an Architect.

You and I know a lot of people and I know that we’ve made a huge impact on so many … don’t you want that to continue? So there it is, soon I will be entering the world of podcasting. I am somewhat amused by the production I am putting into this considering that it’s entirely possible that nobody cares. There are already a handful of architectural podcasts out there, most of which are well entrenched and do a great job, but I’m not doing it because I think there is a void I need to fill. The reason I finally decided to do this was for similar reasons as to why I started Life of an Architect … to fill a creative void and learn something new along the way.

This has been in the works for a few years, but I didn’t start seriously working through what this means until the end of 2017. For years I have received requests to turn my blog posts into podcasts … which simply wouldn’t work, at least not for a lot of them. I have kept the blog focused on the imagery with my words simply describing what is being supported by the graphics. I have long maintained that I am not a writer, but a talker, and that I simply try to write down what I would say if I were talking to someone, which I’m pretty sure I’ve said about 100 times before over the last 8+ years. This is now my chance to talk.

There will be a few things different about the podcast that you’ll immediately notice … it won’t just be me. That’s right, I am going to have a partner in this venture. Originally I had been thinking about going it alone, just like I’ve done here on the blog, but the more I thought about it, the less appealing that started to sound – literally and figuratively. I wanted to have a co-host that would be able to bring a different perspective to the conversation, one that could make a connection to certain demographics that might not automatically gravitate towards me and what I have to offer. You’ll have to wait for the first episode to find out who this collaborator is – but you won’t know them … until you do.

So that’s my big news – or maybe it isn’t that big. There is a lot of work to do, like figuring out how to actually do a podcast. There are things to research like:

How to record two microphones into a single source?

I’ve already been working on the equipment – like I said earlier, I have a grip on the hardware, it’s the software side of things that I completely foreign to me. I think I’ll be alright on topics, just ask the people in my office – I always have something to say – and I have a lot of topics on the site here that would be completely different if presented audibly and with a co-host.
